Alchemy never quite panned out, but it really seems like they were onto something here.

' Le monstre' by Marcel Lenoir for the weekly illustrated newspaper 'Le Courrier Français', ca. 1897.
Decription: This fascinating black & white illustration by Lenoir entitled “Le Monstre” is as baffling as it is intricate. On the right panel, we see worshipping supplicants, bearing gifts of gold and flower blossoms. On the left, faces of the pleading and suffering stare out at the stone-faced, bare-breasted woman shown center. While she clasps the necks of twin roosters held aloft by crazed felines, a variety of writing serpents slither around her feet, feeding on other fowl. Above, a embellished take on the German coat of arms crowns her head.
